Grinding and packaging of your own Raw Meat and Veggies

This site is an excellent source for grinders, should you wish to start your pet on a healthy RAW diet. I have personally used one of their grinders for the past 4 yrs and have always had excellent results from it with no worries. These grinders are built in with a breaker so there is no worries of ever blowing the motor. I have ground chicken quarters with it along with turkey and other meats. I do recommend when grinding chicken bones and "especially" turkey bones (turkey being a harder bone) that you chop into the bones with a meat cleaver, to break them up a bit more. The joint areas are especially harder to grind, if you don't I'm not sure how long the motor will last, and although, as I've stated; I have never had a problem, I have never tried to do a whole quarter chicken without cleaving it first.
Packaging should be done ASAP and not left for any length of time. It is paramount that the meat be packaged and frozen as soon as possible to keep bacterial exposure to a minimum.
I have used a food vacuum sealer for the past 3.5 yrs with excellent results. I make my own bags and it costs me exactly 1.8 cents per bag and the bags are recyclable quality "#2".
Length of time from start to finish is usually 8 hrs. That is including the cleaning of approx. 40 - 50 lbs. of chicken/turkey (skin & fat removed), cleaving the meat to make it easier to grind, grinding (I also include parsley when grinding the meat / optional), packaging individual baggies for each dog and is approx. 1/3 - 1/4 cups of meat in each package for a dog between 18 - 25 lbs. and the sealing process, then straight to the freezer.
Sounds like an extreme way to go and I would say yes; however until you start to figure out the expense of buying prepackaged food each time it is needed. Yes, the convenience is there, with pre packaged food, but what is the impact of ths type of food on the health and well being of your dog. Just like the warnings; we see each day on the news; on humans eating too much processed food, including restaurant and pre packaged foods; so too are the warnings there for pets
This amt of meat for 2 pugs, lasts approx. 4-5 months, with each pug getting one package of meat per day; plus a mix of veggies with the meat. My guys are feed twice a day. The other meal is made up of a variety of beans and veggies.
So I hope that I have sparked your interest into looking at an alternative diet for your pet. A healthier pet means less expense with medical complications in the long run and if started out at a young age, the pet will live a long healthy and happy life, barring any inherent problems.
